Chinese Railway Company Commits Over US$5bn for Ambitious Cambodian Railway Network Expansion

China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) is poised to propel Cambodia’s infrastructure development forward with a colossal investment exceeding US$5.3 billion, spanning a total of 53 strategic projects.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of CRCC, Mr Wang Jianping, unveiled this ambitious vision during an audience with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Beijing on 17 October. The focal point of this extensive commitment is the transformation and expansion of Cambodia’s railway network, ultimately fostering comprehensive national connectivity.

CRCC’s unwavering commitment to Cambodia’s development extends beyond railways. The company envisions participation in three pivotal projects: an e-government data management center, the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap and Phnom Penh-Poipet railway initiatives, and a momentous water supply project encompassing provinces along the Mekong River.

Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his support for CRCC’s expansive undertakings in Cambodia. The water supply and rail systems take precedence, as they are integral components in fortifying the nation’s logistical framework while paving the way for increased investments across various sectors.

Prime Minister Hun Manet articulated a two-pronged vision for Cambodia’s railway system. First, a comprehensive feasibility study for the enhancement and modernization of the existing rail network.

Second, a forward-looking plan to interconnect key railway systems, specifically the Phnom Penh-Bavet and Poipet-Siem Reap lines. Furthermore, an ambitious endeavor to link Cambodia’s rail system with the Vietnamese border was achieved through strategic corridors traversing Stung Treng and Mondulkiri provinces.
