Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) issues a crucial recommendation amid a surge in summer electricity consumption, which has risen by approximately 30% since the beginning of April. The announcement comes as the country braces for increased energy demand during the dry season, characterized by hot and dry weather conditions. This vital information was disclosed in a statement released on 7 April 2024, regarding electricity usage trends during the dry season.

To address the soaring electricity demand and alleviate pressure on the power supply system, Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) has outlined four key measures for consumers to conserve energy effectively:

1. Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of electrical equipment, including air conditioning units, to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
2. Practice prudent usage habits such as turning off or disconnecting electrical appliances, particularly air conditioners, when not in use to minimise energy wastage.
3. Reduce unnecessary door openings, especially in refrigerated spaces, to prevent air leakage and maintain internal temperature.
4. Opt for energy-efficient appliances and adopt energy-saving practices to reduce overall electricity consumption.

The surge in electricity consumption can be attributed to the prevailing El Nino phenomenon, resulting in sharply rising temperatures since the onset of April. Consequently, EDC has experienced a significant uptick in electricity usage, necessitating the operation of high-cost fuel plants to meet the escalating demand.

By adhering to these energy-saving guidelines, consumers not only stand to reduce their utility expenses but also contribute to mitigating EDC’s operating costs associated with generating high-cost energy.
