Expansion of National Road No.5 Between Chroy Chavar-Prek Pnov to Be Diverted

The project of expanding National Road 5 to four lanes from Chroy Changvar Bridge to Preak Pnov Bridge has been adjusted by changing the expansion plan to the Tomnob Kob Srov Dam route instead, which will be a new shortcut connecting National Road No. 4 to National Road No.5.

The change was raised by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen during the inauguration ceremony of the Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge, more commonly referred to Psar Dey Hoi flyover, on 2 July (read more).

According to the PM Samdech Hun Sen, the reason for the adjustment to the plan is due the negative impact of the expansion on local people. The study has shown that the 4-lanes expansion will affect many local homes, temples, mosques and other public facilities.

Therefore, the new direction is the best solution. The new route will also become a new road linking two major of the major national roads of the kingdom which are National Road No. 5 and National Road No. 4.

This expansion is a part of the Cambodian government’s mega project to expand the whole of National Road No. 5 to become four lanes wide. Currently, there are two sections being undertaken including the Battambang-Banteay Meanchey section and the Prek Kdam – Pursat section.

The Battambang-Banteay Meanchey section is being undertaken under a US$185 million loan from the government of Japan and ground was broken on the project in March (read more).

The Prek Kdam – Pursat section is also funded through a US$261 million loan from the government of Japan, and ground was broken on that project in May.

Meanwhile, the next expansion will be the section from Pursat to Battambang, and the last one will be from Bantey Meanchey to Poipet.

“After completion, this new road will help improve the logistic system a lot especially for people in the area. National Road No. 5 is a very important road in term of logistics. It connects Phnom Penh capital city to the Thai border and it is also part of ASEAN Highway No. 1 which connects between the three main cities of GMS Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Ho Chi Minh,” said Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen.
