Germany Reaffirms Commitment to Cambodia’s Infrastructure Development

In a significant milestone marking 32 years of diplomatic relations, Germany has played a pivotal role in enhancing Cambodia’s infrastructure, contributing to the development of over 2,000 kilometres of roadways. This achievement was highlighted during a recent meeting between HE Chhay Rithsen, Cambodia’s Minister of Rural Development, and Mr. Gidon Windecker, a representative of the German Embassy.

The meeting, which took place on 5 June 2025, also included a mission team from the German Development Bank (KfW), the French Agency for Development (AFD), and the European Union (EU). Mr. Windecker emphasized Germany’s ongoing commitment to supporting rural infrastructure in Cambodia, which has encompassed the construction of 92 concrete bridges alongside numerous ponds and wells.

Furthermore, the partnership has led to the introduction of the Rural Infrastructure Development Program for Cambodia (RID4CAM), funded collaboratively by KfW, AFD, and the EU. This initiative aims to construct an additional 520 kilometres of climate-resilient roads, further enhancing the country’s transportation network.

Minister Chhay Rithsen expressed gratitude for Germany’s contributions and urged development partners to consider supporting Phase 2 of the RID4CAM project. He highlighted the need for technical training, the establishment of a digital system for managing rural road inventories, and the provision of a contingency fund for road maintenance post-project completion.

The German Embassy reiterated its commitment, stating that the Federal Government of Germany, alongside the European Community, will continue to support the Royal Government of Cambodia and its Ministry of Rural Development. This collaboration aims to strengthen and expand their partnership, ensuring sustainable development in Cambodia’s rural areas.

As both nations look to the future, this ongoing support emphasizes a shared vision for growth and resilience in Cambodia’s infrastructure readiness.
