The government has recently revealed a plan to construct new hydro-power plant costing about US$160 million in Pursat province by the end of 2019, according to the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) webpage.

This hydro-power plant is to be built at the Pursat River, with a capacity to generate about 80 megawatts of electricity. Currently, the government is conducting study and negotiation with interested investment companies.

Spokesman of the Ministry of Mines and Energy H.E Victor Jona said on 11 February 2019 that the government is currently negotiating with investment firms from China and Korea regarding the selling price for the produced electricity.

If the two sides reach the negotiation, construction of this hydro-power plant is to take place soon sometime in 2019 with construction expected to finish between 3 to 4 years later.

According to the study, construction of the hydro-power project in Pursat Province would cost more than US$160 million and has a minor impact on the environment, said H.E Victor Jona.

If this project works as planned, upon completion, this Pursat River hydro-power Plant will be able to respond to the needs of local people as well as in other sectors such as industry, handicrafts, and services. In addition, the project will also help to ensure domestic energy security, reducing the import of foreign power sources.

To date, there are seven hydro-power projects in Cambodia, with six in the southwestern part of Cambodia. Another project is the Lower Sesan II hydro-power Plant in Stung Treng Province, northeastern Cambodia.
