Government urges review of Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway

The government has called on all relevant Cambodians stakeholders to review the feasibility of constructing the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway. The major infrastructure project has been postponed since the completion of the JICA feasibility study in 2017 as the proposed budget was too high at around US$4 billion.

During a forum on investment and trade between Cambodia and Vietnam held in Hanoi, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen urged the fast-tracking of the expressway project from Phnom Penh to Bavet to enhance the trade and transportation between the two countries.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen wrote on his Facebook page “[Samdech] ask all relevant Cambodians stakeholders to look into the possibility of boosting trade and border logistics”.

The Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway would terminate at the important south-eastern international border crossing between Cambodian and Vietnam and provide a direct connection to Ho Chi Minh city.

According to a study by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the 160km Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway would cost an estimated US$3.8 billion, almost double the cost of the 190km expressway currently under construction from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

The estimated cost of the Phnom Penh-Bavet expressway is so high as the project construction of an 80km waterway across the area’s floodplain, according to H.E Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. (Read more)
