During a courtesy call and discussions held on 21 February 2024, HE Dr Devyani Uttam Khobragade, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Cambodia, expressed India’s keenness to explore the establishment of a dedicated economic zone in Cambodia. The primary focus of this proposed zone would be on core technology investment projects, aligning with Cambodia’s collaborative efforts with Japan and the United Kingdom in similar initiatives.

The meeting, held with HE Sun Chanthol, First Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, aimed to delve into bilateral cooperation. Key topics on the agenda included India’s support for infrastructure development projects and the facilitation of direct flights from India to Cambodia.

The discussions also delved into avenues to reinforce the Cambodia-India Free Trade Agreement, with a shared commitment to strengthening diplomatic and trade ties between the two nations.

HE Dr Devyani Uttam Khobragade, during the meeting, conveyed her interest and vision for a Cambodia-India Special Economic Zone, placing technology investment projects at its core. Concurrently, the United Kingdom has sought collaboration with Cambodia on the creation of a “Green Special Economic Zone,” contributing to global environmental protection initiatives.
