Investment on Waste to Energy Boosted

The Royal Government of Cambodia has boosted investments on converting solid waste to energy which is part of urban solid waste management while amount of solid waste increases year by year.

Attracting investment on waste on energy is stated in the draft of policy on urban solid waste management for 2019-2028 which is currently being discussed by inter-ministries.

According to Ministry of Environment, the government focuses on the strengthening on management of solid, liquid, gas, and dangerous substance wastes and it is to reply the development.

Figures from the Environment Ministry, 1.7 million tons of solid waste was collected and filed at dumpsites in 2018, a 15 percent increase year-on-year.

According to the policy, the government sets nine prioritized projects to be implemented in urban solid management, of which attracting investment on waste to energy is also included in prioritized projects.

The policy stated that investment project generating power from urban solid waste includes investment on building waste burning silos for generating power for consumption in Phnom Penh and potential cities where there are not dumpsites and selection of proper projects for waste to energy focusing on technologies which are suitable and ensure to the sustainable for investment projects.

The draft of urban waste management policy was discussed on January 14 at the Ministry of Economy and Finance with chaired by H.E. Aun Pornmonirath, the Minister of Economy and Finance, and also participated by H.E. Say Samal, Minister of Environment, and H.E. Khoung Sreng, Phnom Penh Governor.
