Japan Enhances Education Infrastructure in Cambodia with USD 20 Million Investment

In a significant boost to Cambodia’s educational landscape, Japan has announced a generous contribution of nearly USD 20 million to construct new school buildings in the Pursat and Banteay Meanchey provinces. This commitment underscores Japan’s ongoing support for Cambodia’s development efforts, particularly in enhancing access to quality education for its youth.

At a recent signing ceremony held on 24 January 2025, HE Ueno Atsushi, the Japanese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Cambodia, detailed the specifics of this initiative. The projects include a vital funding allocation of USD 192,509 to erect a new school building at Koul Toeng Primary School in Pursat Province and facilities at Phum Thmey Primary School in Banteay Meanchey Province.

The plans for Koul Toeng Primary School include constructing a six-room building outfitted with modern furniture, a six-room toilet, and a handwashing station, thereby greatly enhancing the learning environment for students in the Phnom Kravanh district. Meanwhile, the Phum Thmey primary school will feature a four-room school building with necessary furnishings, a four-room toilet, and a handwashing station, ensuring that basic hygiene needs are met for the children in the O Chrov district.

Japan’s Kusanoni Grant Assistance program has supported grassroots development initiatives in Cambodia since 1991. This program focuses on safeguarding vulnerable populations from the threats of poverty and insecurity while also fostering community self-reliance.

Since its inception, the Japanese government has invested over USD 70 million into 694 Kusanoni projects throughout Cambodia, reflecting its long-standing commitment to the nation’s growth and the well-being of its citizens. As these new school buildings come to life, they promise to provide shelter for learning and open new doors of opportunity for Cambodia’s future generations.
