Japan Funds Us$1 Million for Bayon Temple Restoration Project

On 25 September, 2018, Japan funded US$1 million through UNESCO to Cambodia for a restoration project of Bayon Temple inSiem Reap Province.

According to a UNESCO Facebook post, the Royal Government of Cambodia, through the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNESCO on the restoration project of Bayon Temple under the support from Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Preservation of the World Cultural Heritage.

Speaking to The Phnom Penh Post at the signing ceremony, Philippe Delanghe, UNESCO’s Culture Programme Specialist, said the Bayon restoration project is supported by US$1 million fund from the Government of Japan and US$500,000 from the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Philippe Delanghe added that the project is aimed at researching and restoring Bayon central tower and terrace while also continuing with the conservation efforts of the inner gallery bas-reliefs. This the fifth phase of the project which will take place over 2018-2020.

Meanwhile, Japan has funded the project more than 10 years of which the fourth phase of the project cost US$2.5 million over a five year period.

In a phone interview with Construction&Property Magazine, Apsara Authority spokesperson Mr Long Kosal said that Japan has been helping with the project for many years.

“Japan will continue to funded the project after this phase ended, I think” he said.
