Korea Boosts Cambodia’s Climate Analysis Capabilities with $3 Million High-Tech System

The Korea Meteorological Administration has taken a monumental step in enhancing Cambodia’s weather forecasting and climate analysis capabilities with a US$3 million donation of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A weather receiving and analysis system. The official handover took place on October 25, 2023, marking a pivotal moment in Cambodia’s climate analysis infrastructure.

The project is the culmination of years of hard work, spanning from 2020 to 2023, with an allocated budget of approximately US$3 million. This comprehensive endeavor involved the provision of state-of-the-art technical equipment, extensive training programs, and capacity-building initiatives for the officials at Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology. The outcome is set to propel Cambodia’s weather forecasting to new heights.

The GEO-KOMPSAT-2A system, generously provided by Korea, encompasses an array of advanced tools and technology. This includes the GK-2A satellite image antenna, computer servers, UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems, and computers, among other vital components. These tools will not only significantly boost Cambodia’s weather forecasting but also strengthen its capacity to conduct in-depth climate analyses.

In addition to the equipment, the Korean team, led by GI E&S, facilitated training sessions to ensure that the officials at the Meteorological Department possess the necessary skills to operate the system effectively. These training programs encompassed system management and troubleshooting procedures, guaranteeing the seamless operation of Cambodia’s upgraded climate analysis system.

The project, spanning over three years, from 2020 to 2023, was made possible through the generous support of the Korea Meteorological Administration under the Official Development Assistant (ODA) Grant. Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology is the recipient of this transformative initiative, one that promises to significantly enhance the nation’s weather forecasting and climate analysis capabilities.
