Korean Firm Donates 8,000 Electric Motorbikes to Cambodian Government to Combat Emissions

In a significant move to address climate change, South Korean company VeryWords has pledged to donate 8,000 electric motorbikes to Cambodian government officials. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Cambodia and promote the use of environmentally friendly transportation.

The announcement was made during a signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) held on 7 February 2025, attended by representatives from VeryWords, the Global Green Development Institute (GGGI), and Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment.

Mr. Sungwoo Kim, CEO of VeryWords, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “Through the Article 6 Carbon Financing Framework, we are providing these electric motorbikes free of charge and unconditionally to the Royal Government of Cambodia, with support from the Government of the Republic of Korea. Our main objective is to take meaningful action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality in Cambodia.”

Environment Minister HE Eang Sophalleth echoed this sentiment, noting that the MoU aligns with Cambodia’s 2023-2028 Environmental Cycle Strategy. He highlighted how the initiative supports the country’s efforts to fulfil its commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and advance its long-term carbon-neutral development goals. “This investment from Korean companies signifies the deepening cooperation between Cambodia and South Korea towards sustainable development,” he stated.

Additionally, Ms. Shomi Kim, a representative from GGGI, pointed out that the collaboration is rooted in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, aiming to facilitate the transfer of climate investments from developed to developing nations. She mentioned that these efforts build on previous collaborations between Cambodia and GGGI on crucial topics such as waste management, wastewater treatment, transportation, and green mobility using innovative climate technologies.
