Lao Gov’t Approves New 63 km Expressway Section from Oudomxay to Chinese Border

The Lao government has given the green light for the construction of the fourth section of an expressway, enhancing transport connectivity between Laos and China. This newly approved segment will span 63 kilometres, linking Oudomxay province to Boten in Luang Namtha province, a key border area with China, according to a report by Pasaxon on 24 July 2024.

The expressway project, aimed at boosting trade, investment, and tourism between Laos and China, has been progressing in phases. The first phase, a 109-kilometre stretch from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, was completed in 2021 and has significantly reduced travel time from over three hours to just one hour, gaining widespread popularity among travellers.

The second phase extends from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang, while the third phase connects Luang Prabang to Oudomxay province and is currently under contract renewal review. The new fourth section will further enhance the transport network, supporting economic growth in the region.

The Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport is actively promoting the development of land, air, and rail transport links between Laos and China. This strategic initiative is expected to drive substantial increases in investment, trade, and tourism, strengthening the economic ties between the two nations.
