Nearly Completion of Water Diversion System Project in Phnom Penh & Surrounding Provinces

The Cambodian government has announced significant progress in the water diversion system project, with nearly 100% of the work completed across Phnom Penh and three neighbouring provinces—Kandal, Kampong Speu, and Takeo. This update was shared on the official Facebook page of the Royal Government Spokesperson’s Unit on 25 January 2025.

Key highlights of the project include:

– Stung Toch Water Release System: 100% of earthworks completed and 97% of major and minor engineering works finalised.

– Sak Sampov Water Release System: 100% of earthworks completed and 97% of engineering works completed.

– South Rolang Chrey-Slakou Water Release System: 100% of earthworks completed and 97% of engineering works completed.

– North Rolang Chrey-Span Sat Bridge Water Release System: 90% of earthworks completed and 87% of engineering works completed.

– Other water release systems: 100% of earthworks finished and 97% of engineering works completed.

Once operational, the water diversion project is expected to manage approximately 700 cubic metres of water per second, providing the Kampong Tuol Dam with the capacity to safely release around 65% of water, thus alleviating flooding risks in Phnom Penh.

In addition to reducing flood risks, the project will create new historical water release infrastructure, conserve water for various uses, enhance transportation connectivity, establish new tourist areas, and boost urbanisation and infrastructure development.

This rainwater flood release system will be implemented in three phases and involves comprehensive improvements across eight main points, including:

1. Enhancement of the 51-kilometre-long Stung Toch in Kampong Speu and Kandal provinces.
2. Development of Stung Krom Tonle Bati in Kandal province.
3. Construction of the three-line Choeung Canal, extending 27.5 kilometres in the west and south of Phnom Penh.
4. Creation of Canals 59 and 90, totalling 18.8 km in Kandal Stung district.
5. Upgrading Canal 96 and Prek Kong, with a length of 34 km in Takhmao city.
6. Improvements to Prek Peam Sattha, an 18.7 km canal in Prek Pno district and Ponhea Leu district.
7. Development of the Rolang Chrey-Slakou Canal, spanning 58.45 km in Samrong Tong district.
8. Establishment of the O Khsach Canal, connecting Laang Chrey North to Boeung Tamok, measuring 27.7 km in Ang Snoul district. (Read more)
