New Clean Water Treatment Plant Set to be Built in Western Phnom Penh

The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority plans to build a new water treatment plant in the western part of the capital to increase the water supply capacity to people as the demand for clean water increases.

According to the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, the new water treatment plant, named Boeung Thom Water Treatment Plant, has a capacity of 5,000 cubic metres per day.

The water treatment plant is located next to Stung Prek Tnaot in Po Sen Chuy district, which is a source of water for producing clean water.

The water plant is scheduled to be built in 2022 and completed in 2024.

HE Oum Sotha, Secretary of State and spokesperson from the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Science and Innovation, said that the Boeung Thom Water Treatment Plant project is part of the government’s efforts to increase clean water production in Phnom Penh.

“In 2022 the amount of clean water production has not yet fully met demand and in 2023 water production will reach 1 million cubic metres, which should be enough at that moment,” he said.

“However, what we are worried about is the increasing speed of development, so we have to produce around 1.2 million cubic metres per day,” he said.

Currently, the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority has a total of four water treatment plants and produces an average of 600,000 cubic metres per day.

However, the actual demand for clean water is about 800,000 cubic metres per day, which creates shortage during high-demand times, especially in the suburbs of Phnom Penh and on the outskirts of Takhmao city.

In the meantime, the Bakeng water treatment plant is being built and to date is 50% complete. The first phase is scheduled for completion by early 2023, with the capacity to produce approximately 200,000 m3/ day of clean water, while the second phase will expand the total capacity to almost 400,000 m3/ day by the first quarter of 2024.
