New Port SHV Terminal Project Phase I to Start Construction at End 2022

The first phase of the new port terminal project in Sihanoukville will begin construction by the end of 2022, which will enable to handle ships carrying more than 4,000 containers.

Thay Rithy, Deputy Director-General of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, said that in recent years, Cambodia’s waterway transport activities have expanded significantly, especially the loading and unloading of goods at Sihanoukville Port have been actively busy, reported by National Radio on 30 May.

In order to better integrate Cambodia’s water transport sector, both regionally and globally, the port has launched a series of development projects, including the construction of a new port terminal, Thay Rithy explained.

Construction will begin on the first phase at the end of 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025 with a length of 350 meters and a water depth of 14.5 meters, with a loan of more than US$200 million from the Japanese government.

Additionally, the Royal Government of Cambodia has cooperated with the Government of Japan in providing concessional loans to Cambodia for the development of the second and third phases of the deep-sea port terminal. The second phase of the new port terminal project with a length of 400 meters and a depth of 16.50 meters is scheduled to be completed in 2028 and the third phase with a length of 430 meters and a depth of 17.50 meters is scheduled to be completed in 2030.

Currently, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port allows container ships to dock at a depth of only 9.2 meters.
