Prime Minister Affirms Phnom Penh International Airport Will Remain State Property

In a significant announcement, Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen confirmed that Phnom Penh International Airport, also known as Pochentong Airport, will remain under government ownership and will not be sold to private individuals. This declaration was made during his address at the 80th anniversary celebration of the Cambodian National Police on 16 May 2025.

The Prime Minister addressed recent rumors suggesting that the airport had been sold to private entities 15 years ago, emphasising that these claims are baseless. He stated, “Keeping Pochentong International Airport as state property is crucial for safeguarding the new airport. Should any issues arise, we will have the old airport available for use.”

Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Sen highlighted that Pochentong International Airport will serve the people and be preserved as a historical site, reflecting the government’s commitment to maintaining important national assets.

As a notable update, Pochentong International Airport, which has been operational for nearly 70 years, is scheduled to close in July 2025. Following its closure, all inbound and outbound passenger operations will transition to the new Techo International Airport, situated over 2,600 hectares in Kandal province, which also connects to parts of Takeo province.
