Private Firm Unveils Study on Mondulkiri Airport Project

The responsible company this morning presented a brief feasibility study report on the new Mondulkiri Airport to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation for consideration, marking another step forward for this US$60-million project.

The meeting was chaired by the Secretariat of Civil Aviation HE Mao Havannal and attended by company representatives as well as consultants.

The objectives of the meeting were to preliminarily assess the report and provide further inputs for improvement. During the meeting, HE Mao Havannal recommended two main points, including:

1. The study shall include more tourism and economic development activities in accordance with the policy of the Ministry of Tourism

2. The study shall also include the strategic plan to attract more airlines to fly to that area. For example, the firm should come up with more creative tourist destination development or any other investment projects.

In response, the firms appreciated the inputs and committed to adjusting the feasibility study.

The airport project is being studied and will be developed by China Power International Group in the form of a Build-Operate-Transfer agreement (BOT), according to the government’s decision last year. (Read more)

According to the plan, construction should begin in 2022 after Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen set up a special inter-ministerial commission to coordinate and speed up the implementation of the project. (Read more)

Located in Sen Monorom commune in Oreang district, the airport will be built on an area of 300 to 600 hectares and is estimated to cost over US$60 million.
