Phnom Penh’s Flood Mitigation Efforts Progressing: 13 Projects Achieve 6.5% Completion

Of the 50 flood mitigation projects initiated by the government to alleviate flooding in Phnom Penh over five years, 13 projects are currently underway, achieving 6.5% completion. This was announced on Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet’s official Facebook page on 11 July 2024.

According to the announcement, these 13 projects are concentrated in the most flood-prone areas, including the vicinity of five drainage pumping stations, the Boeung Tumpun pumping station area, and the Boeung Trabek pumping station area. The projects aim to expand the capacity of these stations and include initiatives like constructing a garbage collection facility in Boeung Trabek, installing sewers, and restoring main canals.

These efforts have already improved water drainage from areas such as Boeung Trabek, Boeung Keng Kang, Mondial, Boeung Tumpun Airport, and Phsar Doeum Kor.

PM Hun Manet emphasized that the Phnom Penh Capital Administration is prepared to deploy machinery for extensive canal digging along NR No. 3, ensuring that new construction meets technical standards to prevent waterway obstructions. Additionally, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology is working to control water flow into the capital through the Prek Tnaot River to mitigate flooding.

At the closing ceremony of the 2023 work review meeting and the 2024 work direction on 10 April 2024, Samdech PM approved a budget exceeding $300 million to address Phnom Penh’s flood issues.

The strategy involves two main approaches: (1) preventing water from inundating Phnom Penh and (2) enhancing the existing water drainage system within the city. The Ministry of Public Works, Phnom Penh Capital Hall, and the Ministry of Water Resources are the responsible institutions for executing these plans.
