S. Korea Extends US$66 Million Loan to Cambodia for State-of-the-Art Standard Hospital in Northeast Phnom Penh

In a remarkable collaboration aimed at revolutionizing healthcare services, the South Korean government has graciously extended a substantial loan of approximately US$66.5 million to Cambodia. The loan will facilitate the establishment of a state-of-the-art National University of Health Science Teaching Hospital (UHS), a seven-story medical facility equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources.

This momentous initiative, as announced by the Ministry of Health on 20th May 2023, underscores the unwavering commitment of both nations to elevate public health standards and cultivate a flourishing healthcare landscape.

The primary objective of this transformative project is to enhance the quantity and quality of medical resources, bolstering Cambodia’s healthcare sector and effectively catering to the evolving healthcare needs of its population.

The UHS  Hospital will serve as a comprehensive medical facility, encompassing general hospital services and acting as a center for healthcare education and clinical training. Remarkably, it will join the ranks of Cambodia’s eight esteemed national teaching hospitals, solidifying its position as a beacon of medical excellence within the country.

Spanning an expansive area of approximately 25,087 square meters in the northeast region of Phnom Penh, the hospital building will exude a harmonious blend of simplicity and modernity. The architectural design embodies contemporary aesthetics, featuring a spacious entrance reminiscent of the grandeur of ancient Buddhist temples and Khmer-style influences.

Internally, the hospital boasts Simulation Skill Labs equipped with state-of-the-art programs dedicated to medical education, while separate rooms for inpatients and specialized stroke centers ensure optimal patient care.

True to its commitment to integrating with Cambodia’s cultural heritage, the hospital’s exterior showcases elements of Khmer culture, seamlessly blending with the country’s geography. Lush surrounding gardens and a thoughtfully designed roof contribute to a serene and pristine environment, fostering healing and well-being for both patients and medical professionals.

The UHS teaching hospital will commence operations with an initial capacity of 200 beds, with plans to expand to 400 beds in the future, solidifying its status as a leading medical institution. This groundbreaking collaboration between South Korea and Cambodia represents a significant stride towards advancing healthcare infrastructure and uplifting the overall well-being of the Cambodian population.
