17 Japanese Companies Commit to Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Cambodia

In a significant step towards combating climate change, 17 Japanese companies have pledged to engage in greenhouse gas emission reduction initiatives in Cambodia. This announcement was made by HE Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, during a recent meeting with Kohei Wakabayashi, President of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), on 13 May 2024.

During the meeting, Mr. Wakabayashi highlighted the importance of exploring investment and collaboration opportunities between Cambodia and Japan. He emphasised a shared focus on addressing climate change and developing the carbon credit market. This meeting comes ahead of the planned visit by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in July 2025.

Minister Eang Sophallet extended a warm welcome to investors interested in collaborating within Cambodia’s environmental sector. He noted that opportunities abound in areas such as carbon credits, green industries, and energy efficiency, as well as mobilising the Green Climate Fund (GCF). He urged potential investors to adhere to legal standards that would ultimately benefit the Cambodian people.

The Ministry of Environment expressed optimism about the involvement of these Japanese companies, stating that their commitment could lead to the establishment of a robust partnership between Cambodia and Japan. This collaboration is expected to foster a joint economy that aligns with global sustainability trends and emphasizes environmental responsibility.

As these 17 companies prepare to implement their plans, the commitment signals a proactive approach to reducing emissions and combating climate change while supporting sustainable development in Cambodia.
