Siem Reap River Restoration Project Phase 2 Fully Completed

The Siem Reap River Restoration Project Phase 2 has reached full completion, with a handover ceremony scheduled for August 20, 2025. This announcement was made via the Siem Reap Provincial Information Office’s official Facebook page.

Deputy Governor Mr. Ly Sary declared that the project has successfully met all its objectives, which include enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the river, alleviating flooding issues within Siem Reap City, and facilitating transportation for agricultural products via boat along the river.

The project was financed through a concessional loan from the Development Cooperation Fund of the Republic of Korea (EDCF), complemented by contributions from the Royal Government of Cambodia.

While the project is now officially under the management of the provincial administration, the implementing company will remain involved for an additional year to monitor and assist with maintenance efforts.

H.E. Vong Piseth, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, noted that past flooding issues in Siem Reap city were largely due to stagnant water in the Siem Reap River, compounded by high water levels in the Tonle Sap River and inadequate drainage systems. With the completion of construction and repair tasks, the management has been entrusted to the provincial authority, which will work to prevent further encroachments and maintain the river’s beauty.

Looking ahead, preparations are underway for Phase 3 of the Siem Reap River Restoration Project, which aims to continue the efforts established in the second phase.

Launched on May 16, 2022, the Siem Reap River Improvement Project received substantial support from Korean partners and has focused on four key areas to enhance the river’s environmental quality. As the project concludes, it is anticipated to significantly benefit the local community and attract more visitors, enhancing the overall ecological and aesthetic landscape of the region.
