Techo International Airport Crowned as World’s Leading Architectural Marvel for 2025

In a remarkable accolade for Cambodia, Techo International Airport has been named one of the 11 most spectacular architectural creations in the world by CNN, marking a significant achievement for the nation as it forges ahead into the future of aviation. This prestigious recognition was announced on 1 January 2025, positioning the airport at the forefront of innovative design and sustainability.

Set to serve as a vital complement to the existing Phnom Penh International Airport, Techo International Airport is designed with remarkable capacity, allowing it to accommodate up to six times more travelers. With an impressive forecast of handling 13 million passengers annually—growing to an astonishing 30 million in the future—this airport is poised to enhance Cambodia’s tourism sector and establish itself as a regional aviation hub.

What truly sets Techo International Airport apart is its commitment to sustainability. Designed to harness solar energy from its expansive rooftop, it will emerge as the largest green energy international airport globally, setting a benchmark for eco-friendly architecture in the aviation industry. Crafted in the traditional Khmer style, the building’s wooden structures and intricately designed roof pay homage to Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.

Innovative features abound; the upper bar is ingeniously designed to capture sunlight, illuminating the spacious greenery within, while passengers will enjoy a serene journey toward the exit through two elegantly curved wings reminiscent of natural wind formations.

CNN’s feature highlights not just Techo International Airport but also ten other ground-breaking architectural landmarks across the globe, including the New Sydney Fish Market in Australia, Osaka’s Grand Ring Gallery, and the Senegalese Goethe-Institut Center, among others. These structures are set to reshape skylines and redefine urban landscapes.

As construction progresses smoothly—with over 90% completion as of November 2024—Cambodia eagerly anticipates the grand opening of Techo International Airport in July 2025. This milestone promises to enhance the country’s global connectivity while ushering in a new era for travel in Southeast Asia, making it an exciting time for both the nation and the wider region.
