Cambodian Gov’t Establishes Smart City Development Steering Committee

In a decisive move towards urban innovation, the Cambodian government has formed a Smart City Development Coordinating and Steering Committee, underscoring its commitment to future-ready urban planning. The committee, established by a decision issued by PM Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet on 8 August 2024, is tasked with guiding the nation’s smart city initiatives, reflecting Cambodia’s aspirations for a modern, tech-driven urban landscape.

The newly formed committee consists of 11 members, led by HE Prak Sam Oeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior, as Chairman. Supporting him are Vice-Chairmen HE Pen Sophal, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Land Management, and HE Kong Mary, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economy. The committee’s primary role is to advise the Royal Government on a national vision and policy for smart cities, aimed at medium- to long-term development. It will also study and research the smart city experiences of other nations, shaping a concept and scope that is uniquely tailored for Cambodia.

The committee’s extensive responsibilities include drafting comprehensive smart city policies and strategies, collaborating with relevant ministries and institutions to bolster the creation of smart cities within sub-national administrations, and actively participating in workshops, seminars, and training related to smart city initiatives.

Additionally, the committee will organise consultative forums to foster support and cooperation for smart city planning, ensure effective coordination, and prepare progress reports for the Royal Government.
