The Government Decides to Plant Large Trees as a Border Around Tonle Sap Lake in 3rd Zone

In a significant move for environmental conservation, the government has announced plans to plant watershed trees as border belts between the boundary markers in the 3rd Zone around Tonle Sap Lake. This initiative, detailed in Letter No. 696 SJKH dated 25 April 2025, from the Council of Ministers, represents a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, relevant ministries, specialised institutions, and local authorities across six provinces.

The project aims to establish large, flooded forests of watershed trees along the borders already marked by 1,224 posts, effectively creating a protective green belt that enhances biodiversity and reinforces the local ecosystem.

In addition to this initiative, the government is also committed to replanting flooded forests in previously encroached areas and other degraded regions around the lake. This effort is expected to restore vital habitats and improve environmental health.

Furthermore, the government will conduct an extensive study assessing the potential and feasibility of the 11 major lakes that feed into Tonle Sap Lake. These lakes are vital for providing water resources for various uses, irrigation, and supporting the rich biodiversity and ecological stability of the lake.

Another crucial aspect of the initiative is a comprehensive analysis of the lake’s bottom. This study aims to evaluate changes in the lake’s composition, water quality, contaminants, water volume, water levels, and overall ecological health, ensuring that both water security and food security for the surrounding communities are upheld.

This proactive approach underscores the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of the communities around Tonle Sap Lake. The completion of the boundary post construction marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to protect and preserve this vital natural resource. (Read more)
