Siem Reap Accelerates Standard Landfill Construction as Daily Garbage Surges to Nearly 600 Tons

Siem Reap provincial authorities, in collaboration with relevant ministries, are fast-tracking the establishment of a new standard landfill project in Prasat Bakong district, Siem Reap province, in response to the alarming daily accumulation of nearly 600 tons of waste.

During the meeting chaired by Mr. Chan Thorn, Deputy Director General of the General Department of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and Mr. Yun Linne, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap Province, on 4 April 2024, discussions centred on the urgent need to address the escalating waste management challenges.

Deputy Governor Yun Linne emphasised the severity of the waste problem, labelling it as a significant threat to the environment and public health, diminishing the city’s aesthetics and posing health risks to residents. With urban areas producing between 900 grams to 1.2 kilograms of waste per person and remote areas generating around 300 grams per person, the province’s daily waste output surpasses 600 tons, reflecting the pressing need for effective waste management solutions.

In response to the escalating waste crisis, plans are underway to establish new standard landfills equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for storage, sorting, packaging, cleaning, collection, transportation, and environmentally sustainable processing. The proposed landfill in Prasat Bakong district aims to adhere to rigorous technical standards and hygiene protocols, ensuring optimal waste management practices and environmental safety.

Currently, Siem Reap province operates two landfills in Trapeang Thom commune and Prasat Bakong district, established by Gaea and Cintri. However, these sites lack adequate technical specifications and hygiene standards, necessitating the development of a new landfill supported by the World Bank. The forthcoming landfill project underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the pressing waste management challenges and safeguarding the environmental integrity of Siem Reap province.
