Rehabilitation of Main Canal 96 Reaches 35% Completion

The project rehabilitating the main Canal No. 96, a vital component of the effort to manage water flow and divert rainwater away from Phnom Penh, has achieved approximately 35% completion, as reported by the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MoWRM) on 13 March 2024.

According to the ministry, HE Tho Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, inspected on 13 March to assess the progress of the excavation of Canal No. 96 in Kampong Samnang Sangkat, Prek Hoor Sangkat, and Roka Khpos Sangkat in Takhmao city, Kandal province.

During the inspection, Minister Tho Chetha highlighted that the excavation and restoration efforts for Canal No. 96, spanning 34 kilometres in length and 80 to 100 metres in width, have reached a milestone of 35%.

He emphasised the significance of main Canal No. 96 within the broader drainage system and rainwater diversion project aimed at mitigating flooding in Phnom Penh, Takhmao city, and the surrounding areas.

Minister Tho Chetha further explained that main Canal No. 96 serves as a crucial drainage route originating from Takhmao city, the Prey Tnaot River, and the vicinity of the new airport. It facilitates the discharge of water through Canal No. 96 into Bassac Lake, ultimately reaching Prek Kong, Prek Ambel, and flowing into the sea.

The MoWRM is undertaking a comprehensive initiative to address seasonal flooding in Phnom Penh and alleviate water scarcity issues prevalent during the dry season in neighbouring areas, including Kampong Speu, Kandal, and Takeo provinces.

This flood mitigation project for Phnom Penh entails three primary phases, encompassing significant works at eight key locations:

1. Renovation of 51 kilometres of small rivers in Kampong Speu and Kandal provinces.
2. Rehabilitation of Stung Krom Tonle Bati, a 7-kilometre canal in Kandal province.
3. Improvement of three canals, totalling 27.5 kilometres, situated west and south of Phnom Penh.
4. Restoration of Canals No. 59 & No. 90, stretching 18.8 kilometres, located in Kandal Steung District, Kandal province.
5. Rehabilitation of Canal No. 96 and Prek Kong, spanning 34 kilometres, in Takhmao city, Kandal province.

Enhancement of Prek Peam Satha, an 18.7-kilometer canal, situated in Khan Prek Pnov and Ponhea Leu District, Phnom Penh, and Kandal Province.

Rehabilitation of Rolaing Chrey-Slakou Canal, extending 58.45 kilometers, situated in Samrong Tong District, Kampong Speu Province.

Improvement of O Khsach canal, connecting northern Chrey to Chrey Ta Mok, covering 27.7 kilometers in Ang Snoul district, Kandal Province.

Furthermore, the Stung Prek Tnaot Star Restoration project, located in the lower part east of National Road No. 3 in Phnom Penh, Kandal, and Takeo provinces, has achieved a completion rate of 80.6%. (Read more)
