National Road 7 Expansion Reaches 32% Completion

As of 30 January 2025, construction on the vital National Road 7 expansion project has reached a notable milestone, achieving 32.01% of its overall progress. The initiative, aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth, focuses on upgrading the road to four lanes over a total span of 45.5 kilometres. The work stretches from the Vang Vong Moul Skun roundabout in Cheung Prey district, Kampong Cham province, to the Kizuna Bridge in Kampong Cham City.

During a recent briefing, HE Phon Rim, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport spokesperson, announced the progress. He highlighted that the project will be fully completed by July 2027. The upgrade involves constructing a robust asphalt concrete roadway that will be 9 centimetres thick and 24.5 meters wide, establishing eight new bridges (totalling 156 metres in length), and restoring seven existing bridges (116 metres total). Additional infrastructure will also be developed, including storm drains and various traffic facilities.

National Road 7 serves as a critical economic artery, facilitating travel and the transportation of agricultural products while bolstering agro-industrial activities. This strategic road connects National Roads 8 and 11 towards Prey Veng province and Road 71C, leading to National Road 73 toward Tbong Khmum province. It also links to National Road 76 and onward to National Road 78, extending access to the northeastern provinces of Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakiri.

Furthermore, the road is integral to the broader road network of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries, enhancing regional connectivity and trade.

Notably, the construction, expansion, and upgrade of National Road 7 commenced in January 2023 and was financed through a concessional loan from the Chinese government, amounting to USD 117 million. (Read more)
