Vietnam to Construct Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument to Celebrate Strong Ties

Vietnam has announced an ambitious plan to build a Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument, aimed at honouring the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. This initiative underscores their mutual gratitude and highlights the enduring ties that have existed throughout history.

The announcement coincided with a visit from Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, who hosted General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Deputy Minister of Defence of Vietnam, on 4 June 2025. The meeting took place at the iconic 7th January Monument, where discussions centred on the significance of the newly proposed monument.

According to Senate Spokesperson Chea Thearith, General Cuong emphasised the importance of the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument, which will be erected in Vietnam’s museum. The monument aims to provide both national and international audiences with a deeper understanding of the close relationship shared by Cambodia and Vietnam, particularly in the context of their joint efforts against colonialism in the past.

Samdech Techo expressed his approval of the project, stating that it aligns with an initiative proposed by Samdech since 2020 to ensure that a monument honouring this friendship exists in Vietnam as well. He reiterated the importance of such symbols in reflecting and appreciating the mutual support the two countries have extended to each other over the years.

The construction of the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument not only signifies a celebration of shared history but also serves as a testament to the ongoing collaboration between the two nations, particularly in areas such as defence and regional stability. This initiative is poised to enhance the visibility of the friendship, fostering a brighter future for both countries.
