Ministry of Mines prepares bidding for waste-to-energy project

The Ministry of Mines and Energy is preparing the documents for the bidding for a waste-to-energy project which will address the increasingly waste management and increase electricity supply in Cambodia, according to the ministry spokesman.

Speaking with Construction and Property Magazine by phone, H.E Victor Jona, spokesman for the Ministry of Mines and Energy confirmed that following the instruction by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, the ministry is preparing documents for the bidding process for a waste-to-energy project. The winning firm will convert trash into electricity before it is sold to Electricity of Cambodia (EDC).

According to H.E Victor Jona, the bid process and subsequent investment into this power plant will take between 4 to 5 months from this point.

Although he could not estimate how many companies will participate in the bid, H.E Victor Jona said, “We have to prepare the documents for two months and we choose the winning company three months after that. When the documents are completed, we can announce the bid”.

Electricity generated from garbage will cost about 10 cents more than electricity produced from coal or hydropower because the technology used will be more advanced and with a higher cost, he said.

Although the price may be expensive, this approach is essential for Cambodia.

“We consider the cost of electricity as one of the most important factors, but in addition to producing electricity, it facilitates the reduction of garbage because every day we create 2,800 tons of garbage. If we do not have a policy to destroy it, there will be no place to put it, and the land is expensive,” he said.
