Cambodia Pioneers Energy Efficiency with New Electrical Appliance Management Sub Decree

In a resolute move towards sustainable energy practices, the Cambodian government has introduced a groundbreaking sub-decree aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of electrical appliances across the nation.

Unveiled under Sub-Decree No. 254, dated 11 August 2023, the legislation outlines a comprehensive framework to govern the responsible use of electricity by mandating adherence to specified standards and energy efficiency ratings.

Central to the sub-decree is the meticulous definition of “electrical appliances.” This encompassing term refers to a wide range of equipment, machinery, and devices that rely on electricity for operation and cater to the diverse needs of consumers.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has been designated as the pivotal authority entrusted with the crucial role of managing and promoting energy efficiency in electrical appliances. One of its core responsibilities is issuing comprehensive guidelines governing the implementation of energy efficiency labels.

Integral to this legislation is the requirement for importers and manufacturers, whether individuals or corporate entities, to meticulously register specific electrical equipment with the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME). This proactive measure is a prerequisite for securing energy efficiency labels, which must be obtained prior to importing or producing electrical appliances for commercial distribution within Cambodia.

A noteworthy facet of the sub-decree is its mandate that all electrical appliances destined for production, import, and sale within the Cambodian market must bear an energy efficiency label that has been officially issued by the MME.
