Government orders temporary closure of beer gardens to prevent COVID-19 spread

The Royal Government of Cambodia has ordered a temporary closure of all beer gardens throughout Cambodia, starting from 25 March 2020 until further notice to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a statement from H.E. Dr Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism to provincial governors on 25 March 2020, “In accordance with Samdech Techo HUN SEN’s order, to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic, all beer garden businesses throughout Cambodia are to be temporarily closed down from 25 March 2020 until further notice.”

Samdech Techo announced that the government has no plans to close down markets, restaurants, cafes and shops at present. Additionally, Khmer New Year will be held as usual, but the government urged people to celebrate at home rather than at social gatherings.

The announcement was made during the meeting with the 422 Chinese volunteer doctors at the Peace Palace on the morning of 25 March 2020.

To date, the government has given social distancing warnings and ordered the closure of KTVs and cinemas in Cambodia as well as a ban on all large gatherings, including religious ceremonies and concerts.

The government has already prepared more than 3, 000 rooms with water and electricity in hotels, schools and hospitals for COVID-19 patients.  (Read more)
