Gov’t Calls on Capital-Provincial Governors for More Drug Rehabilitation Centres in Cambodia

HE Dr Sar Sokha, Deputy PM and Minister of Interior has urged capital-provincial governors to attract and support private investment projects for the establishment of drug addiction rehabilitation centres in Cambodia. This statement was made at the inauguration ceremony of His Excellency Pen Kosal as the new Governor of Tbong Khmum Provincial Board of Governors on 11 July 2024.

During the ceremony, the Deputy PM emphasised the challenges of investing in drug treatment centres, noting that profitability and lack of state concessions often deter investors. However, he highlighted the success of a mutual assistance model involving provincial administrations, investors, and the families of victims, which has led to the establishment and operation of several centres.

HE Sar Sokha stressed the importance of these centres as they offer a solution for rescuing victims from drug addiction, providing them with education and vocational training to facilitate their reintegration into the community. He also advised the Tbong Khmum Provincial Administration to identify suitable land for pre-investment to attract private sector investment.

In addition to these recommendations, Dr Sar Sokha instructed the new governor of Tbong Khmum province to work diligently on mobilising a US$5 million investment project approved by the Royal Government. He also encouraged the creation of new tourism packages to attract domestic tourists.
