A New Frontier for Conservation: US$520k Canal Project to Shield Techo Sen Russey Trep National Park

In a significant conservation effort, the Royal Academy of Cambodia unveiled plans on 5 May 2024 for the construction of a 52-kilometre-long canal to safeguard the expansive Techo Sen Russey Trep National Park. Spanning 6 metres in width and 2.5 metres in depth, this ambitious US$520,000 project aims to encircle and protect over 10,000 hectares of vital natural habitat located within Preah Vihear province’s Chhep Muy and Chhep Pei communes.

Established by Royal Decree No. NS/RKOT/0414/436 on 8 April 2014, the Techo Sen Russey Trep National Park covers an area of 11,435 hectares. It is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, encompassing dense forest resources, an array of wildlife, significant historical and archaeological sites, including ancient iron ore deposits, and the cultural heritage of the Kui ethnic group.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Sok Touch, representing the Royal Academy of Cambodia, articulated the government’s vision behind the canal’s construction. The initiative is primarily designed to delineate a clear boundary for the park, thereby enhancing the mobility of patrol guards, facilitating effective resource management, and ensuring the provision of water for the park’s diverse wildlife and avian populations. Beyond its practical benefits, the canal is envisioned to enhance the park’s aesthetic appeal and visitor experience, offering a serene and refreshing natural landscape.

However, with the project’s estimated cost set at approximately US$520,000, the Royal Academy of Cambodia has issued a call to action for Cambodian citizens and philanthropists alike to contribute towards the timely realisation of this critical environmental protection measure.
