The Tech Behind Bentley’s Immersive Digital Twins

In the world of massive infrastructure, the biggest challenge isn’t just building a bridge—it’s helping people visualize it before it exists. Bentley Systems is solving this through its iLab innovation hub, where lead designer Liana O’Cleirigh is deploying a suite of high-tech tools that turn complex engineering data into immersive, human-scale experiences.

At the heart of this transformation is the iTwin Platform, which creates “digital twins”—exact virtual 3D replicas of physical structures. By integrating this with Cesium geospatial technology, Bentley allows engineers to place their designs directly into a digital version of the real world, complete with existing buildings and terrain from Google Maps.

This means a designer in London can “walk” through a project in Amsterdam, feeling the scale of the structures relative to their own body.

One of the most groundbreaking technologies O’Cleirigh is currently championing is Gaussian splatting. While traditional 3D modeling often struggles with fine details like thin wires or glass reflections, this new technique uses millions of intelligent “splats” to create photorealistic scenes from ordinary photos.

When viewed through the Apple Vision Pro, these “splats” allow stakeholders to experience a site in stunning high definition, even simulating scenarios like being waist-deep in water to understand flood risks.

Bentley is also making these tools more accessible through iTwin Capture, a workflow that removes the need for expensive hardware by processing massive datasets in the cloud. By using these “show, don’t tell” models, Bentley is helping city planners and engineers win public trust.

Instead of looking at a flat blueprint, a resident can put on a headset and see exactly how a new stadium will cast shadows on their home, making the future of our cities more transparent and interactive than ever before.

Why Infrastructure Needs Better Conversations, Not Just Better Tools

As climate-related disasters like wildfires and severe flooding become more frequent, communities across the United States are finding that their current infrastructure is struggling to keep up. Recent research suggests that moving from traditional asset management to digital one is a great move, but what is more crucial is cooperation. Duke University and industry partners […]

A New Era of Realism: Transforming Digital Twins with Gaussian Splatting

Digital twins, the virtual replicas of physical infrastructure, are undergoing a major transformation thanks to a new technology called Gaussian splatting. Traditionally, these models were built using “meshes,” which acted like a hollow, polygonal skin stretched over objects. While useful, meshes often struggled to capture fine details like thin wires, complex lighting, or reflective surfaces, […]

High-Tech “Digital Twins” Save Kentucky Millions in Bridge Repairs

Kentucky has discovered a high-tech solution to a massive infrastructure problem, proving that fixing 1,000 aging and flood-damaged bridges doesn’t have to take a decade or cost a fortune. By using Artificial Intelligence and “Digital Twin” technology, the engineering firm Qk4 has modernized the state’s bridge program, cutting inspection times by 90% and saving taxpayers […]

How Smart Software Connects Colombia’s Most Remote Towns

Colombia’s state-owned airline, SATENA, is now using advanced engineering software to make life-saving flights safer and more frequent. While most people think of infrastructure as physical things like bridges or roads, SATENA uses a tool called Bentley MicroStation to build “invisible” roads in the sky. In the rugged mountains and dense jungles of Colombia, a […]

Julien Moutte: The Tech Leader Breaking Down Barriers to Build a Better World

Julien Moutte, the Chief Technology Officer of Bentley Systems, lives by a simple philosophy: removing barriers is the best way to move forward. Unlike many top executives, you won’t find him in a private corner office. Instead, he sits at a plain wooden desk in the middle of an open-plan floor, surrounded by his team […]

Dublin Uses “Digital Twins” to Build a Safer, Smarter Future

The city of Dublin is turning into a high-tech testing ground to solve everyday urban problems. By using “digital twins”—which are virtual, 3D copies of the physical city—leaders are finding new ways to protect residents from floods, fires, and traffic jams. This project is part of a partnership between Dublin city officials and the technology […]
