Japanese Aid Breathes New Life into Angkor Wat’s West Porch – Officially Inaugurated

A vibrant moment of cultural preservation and international collaboration took center stage as the west porch of Angkor Wat, a priceless cultural treasure, was officially inaugurated. This triumph comes as a result of a steadfast partnership, with the Government of Japan providing over $100 million in crucial assistance to Cambodia, dedicated to the preservation of Angkor Wat and the meticulous refurbishment of its west porch.

The inauguration ceremony, christened as the “Hal Bridge,” was conducted under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, the revered King of Cambodia. The significance of this moment was highlighted by Lok Chumteav Pheung Sakona, the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, who presided over the grand event on November 4, 2023.

This monumental west porch stretches a remarkable 90 meters, and the restoration process commenced in 2016 as part of a collaborative effort between the APSARA Authority and Sophia University of Japan.

Since 1989, Sophia University has played an active role in assisting the Angkor site, contributing to the training of human resources in archaeology and architecture. Furthermore, students have resided in the vicinity of Angkor, embracing the spirit of cultural preservation and heritage conservation. The establishment of the Norodom Sihanouk Angkor Museum stands as a testament to this dedication.

H.E. Dr. Pheung Sakona, the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, extended profound gratitude to the Government of Japan for their generous contribution of over $100 million in grants dedicated to the conservation of Angkor Wat and the meticulous repair of its west porch. Such benevolence has been pivotal in ensuring that the world can continue to witness the majestic beauty and historical significance of Angkor Wat.

Following the auspicious inauguration, the APSARA Authority will utilize this newly restored west porch as the designated entrance for Angkor Wat visitors while the floating bridge will be used for exit.
