Top 5 Tallest Wooden Buildings in the World

When talking about skyscrapers, who could imagine them to be built from wood? However, there are some skyscrapers made from timber. Here is the list of tallest timber buildings in the world arranged by  Construction Review Online.

1) Voll Arkitekter’s Mjøstårne, Brumunddal, Norway

The 85 metre-high tower claimed the title of the tallest timber building in the world after it was completed in March 2019. The 18-storey building is made of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (glulam), which are strong enough to support large loads.

2) Tall Wood Residence, Vancouver, Canada

The building is 53 metres high and completed construction in 2017. Most parts of the structure were made of timber. Only some prefabricated steel elements and the concrete core were used to assist the mass timber frame. The project was designed by Canadian Acton Ostry Architects Inc and nowadays is being used as a student residence at the University of British Columbia.

3) The Tree, Bergen, Norway

The Tree or Treet is 49 metres tall or equal to 14-storeys. The structure is built with glulam trusses with a concrete deck. The purpose of the concrete deck was to give the structure the required weight. According to the project developers Bergen and Omegn Building Society, timber construction helps reduce the CO2 emission of over 21,000 metric driblets.

4) Dalston Lane, London, U.K

Standing at 33 metres high, Dalston Lane is a 10-storey building that is made of CLT from the first floor to the tenth floor. The project was designed by a British architect, Waugh Thistleton, who indicated that timber was inexpensive and fantastic for the environment.

5) Forte, Melbourne, Australia

This building is 32 metres tall with a total of 10 floors. It was designed and constructed by developer Lend Lease and was built only within 11 months. In 2012, it was the first timber high-rise building in Australia built entirely from CLT to lower carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes.
