US Government Explores Financing for Techo International Airport Project

The United States government is evaluating potential financing options for the construction of the Techo International Airport in Takhmao, with the first phase scheduled to open on 10 July 2025. This development was reported by Nikkei Asia on 16 May 2025.

According to sources, the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC), an agency under the Department of State established by former President Donald Trump to support investment projects, has released an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESAI) report concerning the airport project. However, the report does not disclose specific details regarding the amount or terms of financing.

HE Sin Chansereyvutha, spokesperson for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation of Cambodia, emphasised that it remains unclear whether the U.S. financial assistance will extend to the construction of the second and third phases of the airport. He noted that the current review pertains to private financing in partnership with OCIC, which holds a significant stake in the project. Cambodian companies are required to submit various documents for review as part of the financial assistance process.

The Techo International Airport is strategically positioned approximately 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh and spans an impressive 2,600 hectares. The project represents a collaborative investment between the Cambodian government and OCIC, marking a significant step forward in the country’s aviation infrastructure. (Read more)
