US grants US$450,000 to continue conservation of Phnom Bakheng temple

The United States will provide US$450,000 to the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to continue conservation work at Phnom Bakheng. This was stated by His Excellency W. Patrick Murphy, US Ambassador at the signing ceremony of the Cultural Agreement between Cambodia and the United States on August 30, 2023.

In particular, the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding is a continuation of the next five years of work between Cambodia and the United States regarding the “restriction on the import of artefacts and ethnographic objects of Cambodia” and reducing Stealing unique artefacts from Cambodia.

In addition, this Memorandum of Understanding will continue exchanging artefacts and ethnographic objects for cultural, educational, and scientific purposes to publicize and value Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.

Over the past 20 years, this Memorandum of Understanding has facilitated the repatriation of more than 100 valuable artefacts and strengthened the capacity of Cambodians working to preserve and preserve their cultural heritage.

Since 2001, the United States has provided nearly $ 6 million in funding for cultural preservation in Cambodia, including funding for restoring the Phnom Bakheng and Preah Vihear temples, and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum to create an online inventory. Of art objects in provincial museums and educate the public on the protection of cultural heritage.
