Cambodia’s US$ 1 Billion Dollar Deep-Sea Port Now Open for Business

Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen inaugurated the country’s first deep-sea port on 1 May 2023. The almost US$1 billion construction project will expand Cambodia’s sea freight capacity, in line with its growing economic and trade growth.

The new port will have a water depth of 14.5 meters in the first phase of construction, and 16.5 meters and 17.5 meters in the second and third phases respectively.

In his address at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Sen highlighted the importance of the deep-sea port project in promoting economic growth, stating: “The port will boost Cambodia’s connectivity to regional and global markets and support the development of industries such as tourism, logistics, and manufacturing.”

He added that “the port is expected to reduce transaction costs on trade and increase the country’s access to ships from 18 percent to 93 percent upon the completion of the first phase in 2026.”

The construction of the deep-sea port is a significant milestone for Cambodia’s infrastructure development, marking a major step towards its vision of becoming a logistics hub in the region.
