World Bank provides US$20 million to Cambodia in response to COVID-19

The World Bank has provided US$20 million to Cambodia from the International Development Agency (IDA) to build isolation and treatment centers as well as medical supplies and facilities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a press release from the World Bank on 2 April 2020.

Mrs. Inguna Dobraja, World Bank Country Manager for Cambodia said, “This fast-tracked financing will help Cambodia confront this unprecedented global health emergency by sourcing much-needed medical supplies and facilities to diagnose and treat COVID-19, reduce the spread of infection, strengthen pandemic response capabilities, and shorten the time to recovery for both people and the economy.”

This supporting budget will be used to build isolation and treatment centers, which will enhance the diagnostic capabilities of laboratories in 25 provinces, as well as to finance the purchase of medical supplies to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

In addition, this project will assist the deployment of the Ministry of Health’s Rapid Response Teams in the country through hiring and training of additional staff, strengthening the capacity of the Public Health Service’s Emergency Operations Centre, which coordinates the country’s COVID-19 preparedness and response efforts, and establishing provincial-level emergency operations centers.

The World Bank is currently implementing a US$14 billion fast-track package through “Immediate Support for COVID-19 Country Response” in developing countries in order to help those countries’ economies to recover.
