US$200 million SHV Port Expansion Project in Bidding Stage; Construction to Begin in 2022

The Sihanoukville deep-sea port expansion project phase 1 is now in the bidding for contractor stage after the layout design has been finally completed with the construction expected to begin in 2022.

HE Lou Kim Chhon, Director General of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, said on 30 November that if construction starts in 2022 as planned, the completion will be in 2025.

According to the initial plan, the first phase should have started in 2021, but the working team had made some changes to the design layout, which caused the delay.

The port expansion project has a total of five phases. In the first phase, Japan will provide a loan of US$200 million to expand the port depth to 14.5m and length to 350m. (Read more)

Upon completion of the first phase, the port can accommodate large container vessels with a capacity of up to 60,000 tons, or 93% of the total number of vessels in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the meantime, the Cambodian government is also opening opportunities for development partners to study the second and third phases by expanding the depth to 16m and 17.5m respectively. According to HE Sun Chanthol, JICA is also studying these phases.

In the long term, the government will also expand the port to 18.5m and 19m in the fourth and fifth phases.
