Japan Commits US$430 Million to Transform Sihanoukville Port into ASEAN’s Largest by 2028

The Japanese government has pledged a substantial investment of US$430 million for the expansion and enhancement of Sihanoukville port. This transformative endeavour, set to be realised by 2028, aspires to position Sihanoukville as “the largest port in ASEAN.”

This announcement was made by HE Ueno Atsushi, the new Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia. He emphasised Japan’s unwavering commitment to supporting Cambodia’s development through official Japanese development assistance.

The funds, totalling over US$430 million, will be directed towards the comprehensive expansion of the international port in Preah Sihanouk. The primary goal is to facilitate deep-water port capabilities, enabling vessels to load up to an impressive 600k tons of containers. This ambitious project is scheduled for completion by 2016 said the ambassador during the 70th anniversary of “Cambodia-Japanese Friendship” on 26 September 2023.

Ambassador Atsushi further outlined the future phases of this transformative venture, which will encompass the expansion of over nine container lifting sites. Upon its completion in 2028, this grand vision aims to elevate Sihanoukville International Port to the esteemed status of being the “largest port in the ASEAN region.”

This commitment follows the official signing of a US$310 million loan agreement between Cambodia and Japan on 6 August 2022, earmarked for the initial phase of the Sihanoukville International Port expansion. (Read more)
