Fourth Japanese-Funded Automatic Screen Pit Installed in Phnom Penh Drainage System

The fourth Japanese-funded automatic garbage collection machine in the drainage system (automatic screen pit) in Phnom Penh has been installed and officially put into operation on Thursday 3 June.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of the First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy Mr Toshikazu Tokioka, JICA Representative Ms Aya Tokumoto, and Director of the Department of Public Works and Transport of Phnom Penh Mr Sam Piseth.

This automatic garbage collection machine is located in front of the Old Market Pumping Station and the Chaktomuk Pumping Station, which will be able to collect garbage from drainage systems that were built in the second phase of JICA’s flood protection project.

According to JICA, before the usage of this automated machine, the drainage system was clogged with trash, and workers had to dive into the pit to remove the trash from the drainage water gate.

However, in this new mechanical machine, the garbage is automatically removed and transferred out.

Besides, this new machine will help improve the sewer system in the city as well as protect the water environment by regularly removing garbage.

So far, 4 out of 5 machines have been installed, which have helped reduce flooding in many areas such as in front of the Royal Palace, Old Market, Central Market, Street 19, Street 154, Street 144, and both east and south of Wat Phnom.

This machine is part of the Phnom Penh Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement Project Phase 4 worth over US$36 million, an aid grant from the Government of Japan. (Read more)
