Ground Broken on US$22-million Japanese-Funded Clean Water System in Pursat

The Government of Japan has provided US$21.9 million in grant aid to build a new water supply system in Pursat province to increase access to clean water for the local people.

The ground-breaking ceremony of this water supply system took place on 13 December, in the presence of Japan Ambassador to Cambodia HE Mikami Masahiro and Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation HE Cham Prasidh.

This project is being implemented in Phsar Leu village, Sangkat Lolok Sor, Pursat city, and includes three main tasks as follows:

1. Build a water pumping station with a pumping capacity of 7,260 cubic metres/day, a water treatment plant with a capacity of 6,600 cubic metres/day, and an administrative building. The project will also install water pumping and distribution pipes with lengths of 8.3 km and 75.4 km, respectively.

2. Conduct procurement for a laboratory project which includes the establishment of the management system and the study on quality, electrical and mechanical analysis of distribution systems.

3. Provide technical assistance for the operation and management of the constructed facilities

The construction project is scheduled to be completed by August 2023. After the completion, the water supply capacity of Pursat Water Supply Authority will increase to 13,860 cubic metres/ day. With this capacity, by 2025, 86.1% of the urban population and 67.9% of the total population in Pursat will receive benefits.

This is the second water system built with Japanese grant aid after the first one was built in 2014.
