20km Irrigation Expansion Project in Svay Rieng Achieves 20% Milestone

The ambitious project to expand the irrigation capacity and flood protection of the Prek O Damrey Cross-Prek Thmey irrigation system in Kampong Ror district, Svay Rieng province, has reached 20% completion. This significant progress was announced by the Svay Rieng Provincial Administration on 4 July 2024.

Key aspects of the project include:

  1. Rehabilitating the 8,287-meter-long O Damrey natural canal
  2. Rehabilitating the 12,600-meter-long Prek Thmey natural canal
  3. Rehabilitating the 4,876-meter-long main canal
  4. Constructing paved roads with red gravel on both sides of the O Damrey canal crossing the main canal of Prek Thmey
  5. Repairing and constructing 10 bridges across the O Damrey crossing and Prek Thmey canal
  6. Repairing and constructing 50 structures connecting the Mek Thmey Canal to the irrigation canal
  7. Building community facilities for the management and maintenance of the irrigation systems.

During an inspection, HE Tho Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, emphasized the project’s objectives: ensuring water safety and security for irrigation, providing water for daily use, and offering flood protection. Scheduled to be implemented from June 2024 to June 2025, the project is expected to increase the irrigated area to approximately 16,200 hectares, benefiting around 3,727 families.
