2024 – Cambodia succeeds in its campaign to reduce the use of plastic because the volume of imports decreased by 75%

By the first quarter of 2024, the volume of plastic imports into Cambodia has decreased by about 75%, while this decrease shows that the implementation of the campaign to reduce the use of plastic in the past has been successful. This is according to the announcement of the Ministry of Environment on April 10, 2024.

According to the Ministry of Environment, in the first quarter of 2024, the demand for imports of plastics for the production line decreased by about 75% compared to the same period in 2023 and only two companies received Import permits, while the proposals of six other companies are in the process of review and decision.

It should be noted that in the first quarter of 2024, the Ministry of Environment has divided the import of plastics into two different parts: 1) Imports of plastics for general use, a total of 12,336.38 kg through one company. Second, the import of plastic bags to serve the production line was made through two companies with a total volume of 9,152.44 kg.

His Excellency Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, considered that the decrease in the import of plastic bags for general use shows that the implementation of the campaign to reduce the use of plastic in the past was successful and may be due to the local production of bags. Plasticity is declining.

It should be remembered that in the first quarter of 2023, the import of plastic bags to Cambodia for general use amounted to 49,297.29 kg through 17 companies licensed by the Ministry of Environment. As for the import of plastic bags for the production line, 13 companies have received permission from the Ministry of Environment and have imported a total of 35,580.09 kg.
