Construction Contract Signed for Us$26 Million Stung Bot International Border Checkpoint

The Cambodian government and a Thai construction company signed a contract on 24 May 2019 for construction of the Stung Bot international border checkpoint and a road connecting the border to National Road No.5.

The contract signed by H.E Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport and construction firm Fin Technic will allow work to begin on the project, which will use a loan of 800 million baht (about US$26 million) from the Thai government.

The project includes construction of an administrative building, a 1-kilometre road connecting the border area to National Road No. 5, dormitory buildings, parking lots for goods transfers, renovation of old roads, and construction of flood prevention infrastructure.

Construction will take about 24 months starting from May 2019 onwards.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of event, H.E Sun Chanthol said the project is very important for both countries.

“This place is important because today we are transporting goods to Poipet (the old checkpoint), and both goods and tourists enter through the gate which causes traffic jams,” he said.

In addition to reducing traffic jams, the border checkpoint will have a joint commercial control area for Cambodian and Thai customs officials, which will help to reduce the duration of goods inspection. With the new checkpoint, cargo inspection will take 10 minutes per container, and the gate will be able to inspect from 100 to 500 containers per day.

Stung Bot will only be used to check goods, while the old border of Poipet will only be used for tourism purposes.
