Ground broken on Olympic-sized swimming pool in Battambang

The Government of Cambodia has officially broken ground the construction of an Olympic-sized swimming centre in Battambang province as part of its preparations to host the 2023 SEA Games.

The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister Samdech Sar Kheng and the Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Sun Chanthol, and was attended by hundreds of other relevant officers and locals.

Located at the University of Battambang, this new swimming centre is being built on a total area of approximately 7,000 square metres following the design of Techo Sen Swimming Center in Kampong Cham Province.

The main structure of this 400-seat swimming centre includes a main swimming pool, a deep pool with diving platform, a smaller warm-up pool, as well as an underground water reservoir to maintain the water balance in the three pools.

Being built under a total government budget of about US$2 million, this project is expected to complete construction by late 2021.

During the ceremony, Samdech Sar Kheng noted that due to peace and stability, the sport sector has grown remarkably.

“Sports does not bring about only health and friendship, but it also helps contribute to the growth of the national economy as well through visitors,” said Samdech Sar Kheng.

On the same day, the Government of Cambodia also officially inaugurated five bridges in Battambang province, as part of its strategic masterplan to fully integrate connectivity nationwide. (Read More)
