US$25 million needed for drainage system in Sihanoukville province

To avoid flooding during heavy rains, Sihanoukville will need about US$25 million to build a drainage system, according to the recent draft master plan. The result was presented at a workshop on the results of a feasibility study of the Master Plan for Wastewater Management in Sihanoukville on 24 August.

Speaking to reporters after the seminar, H.E Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, said that the first phase of the wastewater treatment and drainage system (2019-2021) would cost approximately US$170 million. (Read More)

Regarding the drainage system, H.E Sun Chanthol said that the government will need about US$25 million to build a 20-kilometre drainage system as Sihanoukville’s current drainage system relies on natural waterways.

Recently, some areas in Sihanoukville were flooded due to heavy rainfall and construction blocking natural waterways among other issues. (Read more)

Provincial Governor H.E Kuoch Chamroeun, said that the provincial administrative team is currently restoring the waterways but was tolerant as well because in some places people have already built houses over the waterways.

According to the governor, more than 200 families have built houses on the waterways and only 11 families have agreed to move to other locations. The new locations are still being studied.

Sihanoukville province has seen significant development over the last few years and the population has now reached over 300,000 people.
